Self Care Laser Hair Removal
SELF CARE – Pre and Post Treatment
Pre-treatment Instructions:
Stay out of the sun for two weeks before your treatment and use a sun block with protection of factor 30+ when you are exposed.
1. Do not use self-tan or solariums for at least one month before your treatment. The procedure may have to be postponed if you have a tan, as we cannot treat people who have tanned skin because of an increased risk of pigmentation change.
2. It is best that you refrain from tweezing, bleaching or waxing immediately. You should wait 10-14 days after last tweezing or waxing prior to your first appointment.
3. Shaving or clipping of the hair with a small scissors is fine.
4. Shave treated area 24 hours prior to your appointment. Avoid use of prescription strength exfoliant creams (Retin-A & alphahydroxy) for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
Post-treatment Instructions:
1. A mild sunburn-like sensation is anticipated. This usually resolves within 2-12 hours of treatment, but may persist for up to 2 days. Application of chilled ALOE VERA gel may be soothing to the skin. Continue until symptoms subside.
2. Strictly avoid any sun exposure for at least 1 week after the procedure. Apply a sun block with SPF 30+ daily to sun-exposed treated areas between treatments.
3. It is possible to apply make up to the treated area immediately following a treatment session, however it is recommended that a moisturiser is used to prime the skin. Furthermore, use of moisturisers and Aloe Vera are recommended in helping the dead hair exfoliate from the follicle. However moisturisers with alpha-hydroxy may cause irritations and should be avoided.
4. Wash with cold or tepid water. Treated areas may be temperature sensitive. Avoid use of strongly scented lotions or soaps, exfoliating creams & aggressive scrubbing to the treated areas during the healing phase.
5. Allow any blistered or open areas to heal spontaneously. If healing is delayed a thin coating of antibiotic ointment may be advised. Do not pick at these areas- as it can scar. Allow any crusting to heal spontaneously, crusting will resolve in 3-14 days. Application of antibiotic ointment is not recommended for crusting.
6. Appearance of “stubble” may appear in 1-4 weeks. This is not hair re-growth, but the treated hairs being purged from the follicle. Allow this hair to fall out of the skin on it’s own. Hairs that were in the rest phase at the treatment may enter the active phase in 1-6 months depending on the body. Follow-up treatment may be performed within 1-2 weeks of new hair growth.
7. For best results your first 4 treatments are to be done at 4 to 8 week intervals. Although hair may not be visible at the treatment area, it is important to target the dormant hairs beneath the skin. Therefore commitment to your treatment course is paramount in ensuring effective permanent results.
8. Until redness has completely resolved, avoid all of the following;
-
The use AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) or Vitamin A products.
-
Shaving, plucking or tweezing
-
Swimming pools and spas with multiple chemicals/chlorine
-
Activities that cause excessive perspiration
