Spider veins (also known as venulectasias, telangiectasia or broken capillaries or blood vessels) affect millions of men and women. In the past, there was little you could do about broken capillaries and veins. However, Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technologies have revolutionised treatment so that spider veins could be erased. Laser spider vein removal is ideally suitable for people between the ages of 28 to 60, all skin tones and types. Depending on the skin’s condition, most patients will need between 2 to 6 treatments depending on the veins as well as maintenance treatments
Spider veins are enlarged blood vessels that have widened due to a weakness in the vein wall or a problem with the valves that control the flow of blood. Broken veins are the small, superficial purple or red veins stretching like a web under the skin. The leading factor contributing to both spider veins and varicose veins are genetics. Men are less likely than women to suffer from veins and at least 55% of women suffer with abnormal veins. Hormonal factors contributing to the development of abnormal veins include birth control pills, estrogen, pregnancy, progesterone and puberty. For pregnant women, the first trimester is when they are most susceptible to developing abnormal veins. The reason for this is that pregnancy causes an exponential increase in blood volume and hormone quantities, contributing to vein enlargement.
More about types of veins
Results Laser Clinic has treated thousands with the Candela ND:YAG technology. The laser light effectively collapses the veins and broken capillaries without doing any damage to the surrounding outer layers of skin. The reason for this is that the laser light is preferentially absorbed by the red colour in the blood which flows in the veins. This light converts to heat, causing shrinkage of the vein into which the light was directed. The wavelength discharged through the pulse of the machine enables the light to reach the targeted veins under the skin, clearing or fading the vein significantly
The Candela ND:YAG laser treatments offer a solution that:
-
Minimise or eliminate the appearance of spider veins
-
Treat the entire body
-
Cause little discomfort
-
Offer an immediate return to routine activities
-
Provide gradual, natural-looking improvement
-
Produce long-lasting results
Until now there were very few options, if any, for spider vein treatment. Clients often schedule appointments during their lunch hour and have the freedom to return to routine activities.
What to expect of the treatment
The spider vein treatment can take between 5 - 30 minutes, depending on the surface area being targeted. Clients are given a complimentary consultation where one of our qualified therapists will give a treatment course to suit individual spider vein concerns. The treatment involves simply lying on a comfortable bed while the appropriate technology is customised with pulse depths and settings. The skin is cleansed and in some cases, a local anaesthetic cream is applied. Protective eye wear is worn to guard the eyes from the laser light and during treatment, the single wavelength light of the ND:YAG technology penetrates the skin as it reaches optimum temperature. A prickling sensation can be felt with medium-paced, concentrated pulsating beams of light. These beams of light penetrate to well below the surface layer of skin and in the epidermal layer, effectively targeting the spider vein. Immediately after the treatment, redness and swelling may occur which will subside within 24 hours.
The laser technology effectively clears most spider veins in two to six treatments . Changes in the appearance of the vessel will occur, ligtening in colour, bulging or disappearing instantly. If bulging does occur, any inflammation will subside within two hours. Redness in the treated vein will reduce within 1 to 5 weeks depending on it’s severity. Patients experience an improvement of up to 80% in the vein's appearance.
